How does quinine prevent malaria?

2 comments:

  1. Quinine depresses the oxygen uptake and carbohydrate metabolism of the parasite. It also will intercalate into DNA which disrupts the parasite's replication and transcription.

    Pharmaceutical app. Lexi-Comp

  2. quinine works against malaria by inhibiting heme polymerase in a patient's blood. This allows a buildup of heme, which is a cytotoxic substrate. The heme is toxic to the parasites that cause malaria. Its action causes them to die, thus relieving the disease.

    Quinine side effects

    Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using quinine and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
    fever, chills, confusion, weakness;
    severe vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea;
    problems with vision or hearing;
    chest pain, trouble breathing;
    urinating less than usual or not at all;
    fast, pounding, or fluttering heartbeats;
    weak or shallow breathing, feeling like you might pass out;
    pale skin, easy bruising, purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin;
    fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; or
    loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
    Less serious side effects may include:

    headache, blurred vision;
    dizziness, spinning sensation;
    increased sweating;
    mild nausea, diarrhea, or stomach pain;
    muscle weakness; or
    warmth, redness, or tingly feeling under the skin.

    So I think better do not take this medicine for preventing malaria. :)
