Efficacy of Natural vs. Man-Made Vitamin and Mineral Supplements and Fortifications
Do dietary supplements like daily multivitamins and man-made fortifications like the Vitamin D added to milk work as effectively as vitamins and minerals found in natural foods?
If a person eats a wide variety of nutritious foods, vitamin and mineral supplements are largely unneccessary. Healthy foods are better sources of nutrients because they are so complex, and contain a wide variety of nutrients, all in one source. Natural foods like fresh fruits, nuts, and vegetables also contain phytochemicals and micronutrients that are less well understood but are still likely to be very important as antioxidants or anti-cancer agents. Dietary supplements may be a good idea if a person doesn't eat well, or doesn't eat enough, or has special dietary concerns, such as being a vegetarian, or being pregnant, or being post-menopausal. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/supplements/NU00198
